Bon mot time

"No-one ever got laid with a Tom Waits record collection."

Tom Waits

A previously unknown nugget of wisdom from the master, which I learned from Stewart D'Arrietta's cabaret tribute to Waits at the Edinburgh Fringe last week.

I think this may be a tad pessimistic. His oeuvre may not be classic "make out" stuff, but much of it is extremely tender and romantic. And it's all bloody good music. I dream of meeting a woman who might share (and be turned on by) my adoration of Waits....

"Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are those that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you find someone to love the you you love, well, that's just fabulous."

your comment "I dream of meeting a woman who might share (and be turned on by) my adoration of Waits." made me think of this quote. something about finding someone who loves the you that you are and that you love...

Then again, we should be wary of reading too much into a single shared enthusiasm. A conversation about Dave Gilmour's guitar playing once got me into a very messy situation in Gettysburg. But that - as I keep saying - is another story...

"in Gettysburg".... as in Pennsylvania? that must be quite the story.

I found myself working 2-on-2 against Thelma & Louise, teamed with the local high school football coach. When he offered the gals a midnight "tour of the battlefield", he had something else in mind.

It was the day after TBC's wedding, and I was on a whistlestop Civil War battlefields tour with a bunch of our old Oxford cronies. They, however, thought it would be amusing to abandon me in the bar (I had no idea where our motel was, and didn't have my own key) when they saw me getting on so well with the Dave Gilmour fan.

on the other hand, if there is more than Waits...Harold and Maud, beer, things that keep you out talking all night, then perhaps it's worth finding out a little more about what is in common, before you write it off.
